IE 5.x smears with lots of select boxes(50+). Why can I use lots of select boxes?

In my experiments with this, it seems dependant upon the user's machine.

In one test in our office, it occurred on a page with 150+ select boxes 
on a computer using Win98, IE5 and 64megs of ram. We reduced the select 
boxes to 127 (determining the problem to be still present at 128) and 
the problem cleared up.

However, we continue to receive calls from clients stating the problem 
exists on their computer. 1 such system is a 512meg, P3 with a GeForce 
(64meg?) video card and running IE6. We have not yet determined the 
final solution to this and would love to have input from anyone else 
with this problem.
