If you use PHP as a standalone tool and want to fopen() a http:// but need to go via a proxy, how can you do this ?

PHP3: run 'curl' as an external program (see other answers regarding 
HTTPS)

PHP4: use the new curl module

Curl 'emulates' a browser and gets the remote web page, ftp file or 
whatever.
