What does the error "Found old style password for user" mean?
How can I fix things if I didn't use the PASSWORD() function when inserting passwords?

The above means that you have inserted rows into the mysql.user without
using that PASSWORD() function on the passwords.
Restart mysqld with --skip-grant and go to the mysql.user table and
update all rows which has the wrong password:
shell> mysql mysql
