On the surface of this answer no you cannot do as you ask, but what you
can do is to place data into a textarea inside a form, place the form
inside the iframe and submit the data by a submit button on the form via
the normal form usage. There is no reason why this should not work.
<iframe width="50%" name="myFrame">
  <form method="post" action="/cgi-bin/cgisubmit.cgi" name="myForm">
    <textarea cols="40" name="newText" rows="10" value=""></textarea>
    <input button="submit" value="Send data">
  </form>
</iframe>
When referring to the textarea try "document.myFrame.myForm.newText"
There does not appear to be any difficult issue in your question, unless
something has occurred outside the normal run of events inyour document.
Good luck.
