I encountered various errors and random crashing when trying to use 
JBuilder and NetBeans on my Win2K Professional machine. 

It turned out that a bug in the video driver for my ATI Rage 128 Pro 
video card was the culprit (seemed to be in the DirectX DirectDraw 
routines - turning DirectDraw off in dxdiag.exe stopped the crashing 
but incurred a performance hit).

If you have an ATI card you can get the latest drivers from their site:

http://www.ati.com/ 

Incidentally, if like me you have a "big-brand" machine (I have a Dell 
Dimension), the video card has a slightly different build to the pure 
ATI product and the official ATI driver will not install. Visit your PC 
vendor's site to download their own version of the video card drivers.
