VMWare: Operating system: Install: Linux: Red Hat: v9.0: CD2: Error: Package xpdf-2.01-8 not opened

Knud van Eeden,

VMWare v4.0.0 - build 4460 for Windows workstations: Operating system:
Install: Linux: Red Hat: v9.0: Install:
Error: Package xpdf-2.01-8 cannot be opened, when installing from CD2
of Linux Red Hat v9.0

Internet: source:
http://www.google.com: search for 'package xpdf-2.01-8'

This occurs to be (at least) a problem of using VMWare v4.0.0 (build
4460) for Windows workstations to install
Linux Red Hat v9.0, as it even occurs with a Linux Red Hat v9.0 product
which you buy in a box from a shop.

I tried at first to eliminate the problem by e.g. trying other CD-RWs,
fully erasing CD-RWs, trying another burning software program (Nero,
Roxio,
...), reinstalling Linux Red Hat v9.0 again in VMWare, trying different
download sites (ftp.redhat.com, and other mirror sites), trying
different
download programs (Total commander, Download Accelerator,
CuteFtp, Internet Download Manager, ...) but
after 3 times getting this error 'Package xpdf-2.01-8 cannot be
opened',
while varying and double checking circumstances you are starting to
look
for the cause elsewhere.

---

You can circumvent the problem with the following steps:

Steps: Overview:

 1. -download CD 2 from the Red Hat ftp.redhat.com site
(or you might generate an ISO CD image from your existing
and tested CD-R or CD-RW -- use e.g. Nero or Roxio Easy CD
creator to do this, then save it to your harddisk.

 2. -Start VMWare v4.0 for Windows Workstations

 3. -Install CD 1 of Linux Red Hat v9.0, and start the installation
       (e.g. using 'Linux text')

 4. -run this Linux Red Hat v9.0 installation program until CD 2
        comes with this error message:
        'Package xpdf-2.01-8 cannot be opened'

 5. -select from the VMWare v4.0 menu option 'Edit'

 6. -select from list 'Removable Devices'

 7. -select your 'CD-ROM', and expand until you see 'Edit...'

 8. -enable radio button 'Use Iso Image'

 9. -browse to the directory where your ISO image file
(=a file with the extension .iso or .nrg usually)
             is located

10. -click button 'OK'

11. -Then click on the button in the Linux Red Hat v9.0
               installation program to continue.

(the installation of Linux Red Hat v9.0 in VMWare v9.0
went fine further [kn, ni, we, 14-05-2003 15:26:56])

Note: This problem has also been reported by me to VMWare support.
