what are the color codes to wire an american electrical plug as I am from England

The "hot" wire is black.  When wiring a receptacle it is attached to 
the brass screw.

The neutral wire is white.  It is connected to the silver screw.

The ground wire is either green or bare, and it is connected to the 
green screw.
