VMWare: Operating system: Install: UNIX: Solaris: v9: How install
Solaris v9 on VMWare v4.0 Windows?

---

Steps: Overview:

 1. -Download the 3 CDs from

      http://wwws.sun.com/software/solaris/binaries/get.html

      then choose

      http://survey.sun.com:8080/ViewsFlash/servlet/viewsflash?
cmd=showform&pollid=Red%21sol9_x86_download

     (this will cost usually $20)

     For the installation in VMWare you do not have
     to immediately burn them on a CD, that you can
     do later. This because you use this downloaded
     files (which are so called .iso images) to
     install.

 2. Unpack the downloaded CD

     sol-9-u3-x86-v1.iso

 3. -In VMWare create a new virtual machine

      (menu 'File'->'New'->'Virtual machine)

 4. -select from list 'Other'

 5. -Accept the defaults

 6. -I reduced the memory to the minimal 96 megabyte.
     (to avoid e.g. a slow Microsoft Windows XP
      machine, when using 256 megabyte of RAM)

     Note: If you choose less than 96 megabyte, the Solaris
     installation program will exit later, stating that you do not have
     enough memory

 7. -Inform that you are going to install from iso image

     8. -select from menu option 'Edit'

     9. -select from list 'Removable devices'

     10. -select from list 'CD Rom'

     11. -select tab 'CD-ROM device'

     12. -enable radio button 'Use ISO image'

     13. -click button 'Browse'

     14. -browse to the directory of your iso file:

      sol-9-u3-x86-v1.iso

     15. -click button 'Open'

     16. -click button 'OK'

 17. -Start the virtual machine Sun Solaris

 18. In the menu choose

     'Custom JumpStart'

 19. The installation starts again

 20. Choose some minimum installation settings
     (e.g. for the monitor), continue installing
     using <F2>

 21. After installation of CD 1,
     stop the rebooting by clickig , unzip CD 2

      sol-9-u3-x86-v2.iso

    and point to this CD via VMWare menu
    'Edit'->'Virtual Machine Settings...'->
    'CD-ROM'->iso image and browse to it.

    boot from boot partition

 22. supply your chosen root password twice

 23. wait possibly a while until the system
    has checked e.g. the network

24. You should see now

    'Starting the common desktop environment 1.5'

25. Installing Solaris 9 packages (part 2)

26. After installation, which takes a while
    press '2. Done', then return to reboot

27. Supply your userid and password
    and you are in a basic graphics
    environment

28. There are no VMWare tools available for a better display
    so try e.g. the steps at

http://www.computing.net/solaris/wwwboard/forum/3923.html

29. If you reboot, you should choose option

    '1. Boot'

    and not '2. Solaris' else you might get
    a 'bad PBR signal'

30. Increase the screen resolution
