VMWare v4.0.5: Install: Microsoft Windows 95: How to install on Dell
8500 Inspiron with pentium 4?

---

Steps: Overview:

---

 1. -Start VMWare

 2. -Created a new VMWare machine (menu VMWare, 'File'->'New')

 3. -But I did not choose Windows95, but chose Windows XP instead, but
named it Windows 95 (because else it would not detect my floppy
     disk USB unit)

 4. -But put the memory back to 32 or 64 megabyte, otherwise
you might or will get a windows protection error later
     (via 'Edit virtual machine settings')

 5. -Put in a boot CD or boot floppy (recommended to use one
from Windows 95 or 98, otherwise you might get errors)

 6. -Start VMWare

 7. -Run fdisk.exe
(but do NOT choose large disc files in the first
option, so answer 'N', or else you
can not use it for Microsoft Windows 95, it
will give a SU-0013 error later during setup)

 8. -Then after restarting do format c:
to format the VMWare c:\ drive

 9. -Put boot order (via VMWare start <F2>, give focus
to the VMWare window first, else it will not react
on you pressing <F2>) to CD ROM (use numeric '+'
to move 'CDROM in the first place, then <F10> to
     save)

10. -Copy all files to the C: drive (e.g. c:\temp\win95)
(I tried to run from CD, but it did hang the computer)

11. -Start Windows 95 file:

      setup.exe

12. -Do not install network card or sound card

13. -Before restarting, take out the CD

14. -I got an NDIS protection error, this is a hardware
     problem.

The solution is to restart with the processor in less than 2.2 GHz
     mode

(so take out the mains, and continue on battery,
and restart the computer, press F2 to setup
the BIOS, put the CPU intellistep on 'Disabled'
and restart -- as it did not help
      to just unplug the mains)

15. -After restarting the installation continue with the devices,
password, it stopped for a while at 'Windows help', I just
restarted Windows 95 (I had to reset the memory
from 256 megabyte to 64 megabyte in order to get it
running without a 'Windows protection error')

16. -After that the installation went OK.

Time used: about 6 hours before finally succeeding.
