Steps: Overview:
You will need CD1 and CD2 if you are installing from CD.
1. -Insert CD1 or DVD
2. -Created a new VMWare machine (menu VMWare, 'File'->'New')
1. 'Typical'
2. 'Linux'
3. Choose a name (e.g. 'Linux SuSE v9 - English')
4. Use 'bridged networking'
3. -The default memory used is 256 megabyte on my machine
4. Reduce possibly the memory (so that your Windows XP machine is not
becoming too slow or freezes)
(menu 'Edit'->'Virtual Machine Settings'->'Memory Guest Size',
choose e.g. 64 or 80 Megabyte, 'OK')
5. -Put in the Linux SuSE CD1 or DVD
6. -Start VMWare
7. -The SuSE installation starts...
(this shows here a really very nice looking graphical installation
menu, in high resolution)
8. -Choose the language (e.g. 'English (US)')
9. -Accept the 'Driver/Module to load' (e.g. 'BusLogic')
10. -This will now show a couple of proposed settings
1. Change e.g. the time zone by clicking on that link
11. -When ready, click 'Accept'
12. -Accept to install this settings
(I accepted all the default settings, and did not change
anything further). This takes about 1 hour.
13. -It finishes the installation with
1. Update configuration
2. Copy files to installed system
3. Install boot manager
4. Prepare system for initial boot
14. -Rebooting Linux SusE v9 in VMWare
15. -SuSE YaST2 Initializing...
16. -Confirm hardware detection 'Network Cards'
17. -'Continue'
18. -If you install from CDs, insert CD2
19. -'OK'
20. -Enter password for root
21. -Detection network cards
22. -Detection ISDN cards
23. -Modems
24. -Possibly 'Change' some settings (e.g. of network card)
25. -Saving network configuration
26. -Possibly check Internet connection
27. -Choose identification method (e.g. default 'NIS')
28. -Add possibly new user
29. -Writing the system information
30. -'Next' when information about NVidia card
31. -Detection graphic cards
1. Detected: VESA (640 x 480 @ 24 bit)
2. 3D acceleration unavailable
32. -Detection printers
33. -Detection sound cards
34. -Detection TV cards
35. -Saving sound card settings
36. -Congratulations! The installation of SuSE Linux
on your machine is complete.
After clicking 'Finish', you can log in to the
system.
37. -The VMWare Linux v9 reboots
38. -The boot did hang, so I restarted manually in VMWare
39. -Welcome screen
40. -KDE v3.1 starts
41. -Short sound is played
42. -Entering the Linux SuSE desktop
