VMWare: Operating system: SUN: Solaris: v9: How to increase screen
resolution? [VMWare tools]

---

Steps: Overview:

 1. Download the following 2 files from
    http://www.camberwind.com/solaris

http://www.camberwind.com/solaris/SUNWxf86u_4.2.0_vmware_sol9x86.pkg.bz
2

http://www.camberwind.com/solaris/SUNWxf86r_4.2.0_vmware_sol9x86.pkg

 2. and copy these in a temporary folder in your Solaris 9

 3. you can for example copy the 2 files to a CD-RW, in that case
do not forget to put via VMWare menu 'Edit'->'Removable devices'->
'CD-ROM' the settings back to the 'physical drive' instead of the
     iso file

 4. If you then open a Sun Solaris console, and type

     cd cdrom

     cd cdrom0

     ls

you should see this files sunwx*.*

 5. create a temporary directory in Sun Solaris

     mkdir /TEMP

     cp sunwx*.* /TEMP

    cd /TEMP

 6. Before you do the remaining steps make sure you remove any other
versions of SUNWxf86u and SUNWxf86r that you may have installed.

 7. Uncompress SUNWxf86u_4.2.0_vmware_sol9x86.pkg.bz2 by running this
    command:

      bzip2 -d SUNWxf86u_4.2.0_vmware_sol9x86.pkg.bz2

This will return to the command line, without showing
    any message

 8. Run the following command in Solaris 9 to install the above
packages.

You should first run this command:

      pkgadd -d SUNWxf86u_4.2.0_vmware_sol9x86.pkg

and select default 'All' by pressing <ENTER>

       and 'y' to create directory

       and 'y' to continue installation

 9. Then you should first run this command:

      pkgadd -d SUNWxf86r_4.2.0_vmware_sol9x86.pkg

and select default 'All' by pressing <ENTER>

       and 'y' to continue installation

10. Set up graphics, by typing the command

     kdmconfig

    as a root

11. Press <F2>

12. Select [x] Change video device/monitor

13. Press <F2>

14. Select XFree86 VMware driver as the Display card, this should be at
the bottom of the list by using the up and down cursor keys
(this will take a while, as it the scrolling
     moves very slow)

15. Press <F2> to continue

16. Select the Appropriate Monitor, resolution and Color depth for your
    computer

(You need to set your color depth and desktop to the same settings
as your host operating system, e.g. 1280x1024 and 256 colors.
In general try to get as close to your host operating
    video settings as possible)

    e.g.

    I chose 'Notebook LCD XGA 48 khz (1024 x 768 @ 60 Hz)

    <F2> to continue

    I chose '15 inch'

    <F2> to continue

    I chose '1024 x 768'

I had also to change the colors to the maximum

    ---

another choice on another computer might be:

     [X] MultiFrequency 60kHz (up to 1600x1200 @ 60Hz)
     [X] 15-inch
     [X] 1280x1024 - 65536 colors @ 70Hz
     [X] 1280x1024

17. Test your installation.

You should see a screen with the color rectangles
and be able to inform that the display is correct
    by clicking with the mouse

18. If you do not see this test screen, change your
settings or choose another video card.

19. Press <F4> to bypass if you have seen the test screen

20. The login screen should appear now, type your
    login name and password

21. And yes, the Sun Solaris opening screen showed beautifully in 1024
x 768 resolution and 16 million colors here successfully, using
VMWare v4.0.5 for Windows workstation on Microsoft Windows XP.
