Do MySQL connections time out?

In "chapter 10 Getting Maximum performance from MySQL" of the manual:

  variable wait_timeout: The number of seconds the server waits for 
  activity on a connection before closing it.  It defaults to 28800 (8 
  hours). You can tweak it to adjust your needs if you want to.
