FTP = File Transfer Protocol

FTP is a file transfer protocol that runs at the
'Application' layer and is operating system independent.

FTP is an Internet client-server protocol for
transferring files between computers.
(e.g. exchange data and programs between
sites on the Internet)

You can use it e.g.:

 -to create directories on other computers

 -to upload your homepage and other HTML pages to another
  computer (e.g. to create a homepage).

In a TCP/IP network (Internet, UNIX, Linux, ...), FTP is a set of
commands used:

 - to log onto the network

 - list directories

 - to copy files
