Basically two major package schemes exist:

 .rpm

and

 .deb

---

Other files might be distributed as

 .tar

or 

 .tgz

files

To handle .rpm files, use e.g. the command

 rpm

To handle .deb files, use e.g. the command

 dpkg

---

To handle .tar files, use e.g. the command

 tar
