Network: NETBIOS: Can you tell me more about NETBIOS and NETBEUI?

---

NetBIOS and NetBEUI (NetBIOS Extended User Interface) are two network
protocols that were developed around 1980 by the Sytek company,
who wanted to connect personal computers to large SNA (Systems Network
Architecture, originally from IBM) networked hosts.

NetBIOS uses names of up to 15 characters (e.g. MYCOMPUTER1) to
identify and locate computers on the network.

1. These computer names (e.g. MYCOMPUTER1) are then

2. mapped to an IP address (e.g. 123.145.254.68),

3. which in turn is mapped to the MAC address
   (e.g. 0F-0C-EB-17-2E-43)
   of your network card.

---

To find out which computer it belongs to, a computer running NetBIOS
broadcasts requests over the network, to which the computer with the
right NetBIOS name responds, supplying its MAC address. After which
this 2 computers should be able to communicate with each other.
