Operating system: Microsoft: Windows: XP: Repair: How to do reparation
installation?
---
Steps: Overview:
1. Note:
First write down or look up your Microsoft Windows product key
(usually it is found on a label on your original Microsoft Windows
CD cover).
So you should write this down or otherwise record this,
before the repair installation, especially if you have this
information stored on your hard disk)
2. -insert your original Windows XP CD
3. -boot your machine
4. -press any key to start booting from this CD
5. -Choose Microsoft Windows XP install
6. -Microsoft Windows will now start to load drivers and programs
needed
7. -press 'S' for setup in the setup window,
after that Microsoft Windows should detect your existing
operating system on this computer
8. -after that, choose 'R' for repair
9. -this will start the repair
10. -when the installation is finished, the computer will reboot
(do not press the key to boot from CD, after reboot, or the
process will start all over again)
11. -Supply the product key
(so you should write this down or otherwise record this, before
installation, especially if you have this information stored on
your hard disk)
12. -after further installation, again a reboot
13. -the system asks you now to reactivate
(choose e.g. 'no, remind me in a few days')
14. -after that you can login
(e.g. as administrator),
as usual and all your old programs should still be present.
---
Total time: estimated 50 minutes (depending on your machine).
---
Disadvantage:
-most peripherals (e.g. USB drives) might have to be detected again.
But as most of the drivers are already present on your computer, this
should only take a few minutes typically.
But for other programs (e.g. some printers or scanners) you might have
to insert that installation CD for that device again, in order to have
the correct drivers installed.
-All earlier Microsoft Windows updates (e.g. service pack 1, service
pack 2), are undone, so you will have to redo this.
