running install configuration file with standard options halts with "configure: error: cannot find output from lex; giving up." What do I need / do?

I had this same problem.  Turns out I didn't have flex programming tool 
installed.  I installed version 2.5.4-1 off of my distribution CD and 
PHP compiled.  Hope that helps.

and i want to thank the person above.. I finally got my php4 to make and
make install.. this has been a long and long road..I have scream out of
frustration..
but I think I got it now
