Total Commander: View: What are the different modes to view a file?

===

method: double clicking on filename

If this file is stored on your local computer,
this will show the file (using the program associated that
file extension).

e.g. when you double click on that filename in your local computer,
     then if you associated a .gif file with irfan view, it will show
     that .gif file in irfanviewer.

===

method: putting the cursor on that filename, then pressing <F3> edit

This will open that filename content in the default lister
(e.g. notepad).

This will work both if the file is stored on your local computer,
or remote in an ftp directory.
