Kate,
     JavaScript executes on the client side.  PHP executes on the 
server side.  Yes, a PHP document may contain JavaScript code and teh 
PHP code can be used to send the JavaScript code to the client for 
execution.  However, because of the client-side vs. server-side issue, 
JavaScript and PHP cannot talk directly to each other (meaning, e.g., 
they cannot directly exchange variable values and they cannot directly 
invoke each other's functions).
