Call to undefined function: mysql_pconnect(), but MySQL is enabled

This is a RedHat version 4 system, with distributed PHP (4.3.9), MySQL
4.1.20, and RedHat's distributed apache 2.0.52.

phpinfo() shows MySQL is enabled; php.ini has persistent connections
turned on for MySQL.  I still get this error with PHP apps that have a
MySQL backend, such as PHP-Nuke and webcalendar.
