What are the flipside of Free Open Source Software (FOSS)?

Dec 5th, 2007 04:06
Maneet Puri,

Although free open source software is quite economical for many business
organizations, they are, however, not free from troubles. For instance,
in case something goes wrong with these software applications you do not
have any support to take the help from, which you usually can do if you
buy it from authorized software applications manufactures. Commercial
software applications, unlike FOSS, are tested meticulously before being
offered in the market. Besides, you also have the privilege of testing
their performance for a fixed free-trial period.

Moreover, when you use open source software in your organization,
chances are your staff may not be familiar with the applications and you
will end up spending resources on their training and not to mention the
configuration cost.

Free source software comes with no guarantee against virus and worms
threats. Hence, you could be courting viruses such as Trojans and
Malware when you download these free open source software.
