how can l run two different versions of internet explorer on the same computer,as is possible with netscape?

yes you can have multiple versions of the Internet Explorer on the same
platform provided you have windows NT ...

First of all.. you have to down grade the browser version to the
default version (i.e.. IE4.0) ,and then you have to install the
version 5.0 using the custom setup. Then there is a link
called "Advanced". click on that which will open the option to over
write or to install 5 separately.. Check the second option.. and
that's all.. you will have 4 and 5 on your same OS.

Personally I use vmware (www.vmware.com) to manage multiple operating
systems and microsoft browsers. It's very handy.
