Operating system: Linux: USB: Feather Linux: Install: How install +
boot Feather Linux on USB stick?
---
Steps: Overview:
1. -Download Feather Linux
feather-0.6.2-usb.zip
(file size is 63 megabytes)
from
ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/featherlinux/
2. -Unzip this file to the root '\' of your USB drive
e.g. using the pkzip command line utility to unzip
(where in this example k: is your USB drive)
pkzipc.exe -extract -dir c:\feather-0.6.2-usb.zip k:\
3. -That will create a directory '\KNOPPIX' and some other files in
the root containing about 64 megabyte of files (so your USB drive
should e.g. be at least say 128 megabytes)
4. -I tried to run the 'syslinux.exe' program from (after unzipping
the file syslinux-2.11.zip, about 600 kilobytes) from
http://syslinux.zytor.com
e.g. type on the MSDOS command line (where k: is in this example
the drive letter of your USB stick)
syslinux.exe k:
but when I tried to boot from this USB on the test computer (I did
set the BIOS option to boot from USB, during starting up of the
computer) that did not work.
So I decided to create a boot diskette instead
Note: syslinux.exe runs fine under Microsoft Windows XP.
Note: do not run 'syslinux.COM' instead on Microsoft Windows XP,
as this program is not designed for this, and will give a write
to harddisk error because of being 16 bits and the program will
not run further. You could if your really want let it run by
setting the 'compatibility mode' for this program ('Start'->'Help
and support'->'Fixing a problem' ->'Application and software
problems'->'Getting older programs to run on Microsoft Windows
XP'->link 'Compatibility wizard' -> browse and select the program
(e.g. syslinux.com) and choose compatibility with Microsoft
Windows 98.
5. -I created a boot diskette
1. Download the file
bootusb-1.1.img
from
ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/featherlinux/bootusb-1.1.img
Note: I tried the bootusb.img file first, but that did not
work. When I booted from this floppy disk, my computer
did hang and complained about not finding the Knoppix
files
2. Put an empty diskette in your floppy drive
3. Create a boot floppy
6. -When finished, I put that boot floppy in my computer and the USB
stick in the test computer.
1. I booted the computer
2. This activated the boot floppy
3. After which Feather Linux started successfully
on the USB stick
---
---
Tested successfully on:
-Microsoft Windows XP Professional,
-running Feather Linux on an USB stick
-USB stick used was the 1 gigabyte Cruzer SanDisk
(http://www.sandisk.com/)
-boot floppy created with winimage v7.0
