Please help me put a access database up to a server side mysql. My first attempt is frustratingly not working

You could use MyAccess to move your db from Access to MySQL
MyAccess is an administration tool for MySQL running under Access 
97/2000.
MyAccess has a lot of other features such as:
--> create/modify tables
--> connect tables to Access
--> mysql database definition report
